The US military reportedly aborted an operation to board a Chinese cargo vessel earlier this year after discovering that intelligence regarding nuclear components was generated by an AI hallucination. According to an investigation by CNN, an intelligence analyst within US Special Operations Command Pacific used an unidentified generative AI chatbot to review the ship's manifest. The software falsely asserted that the vessel was carrying nuclear weapons parts bound for Iran, prompting military personnel to prepare an armed interdiction and scramble aircraft before higher-level officials identified the fabrication.
